Day at the Printshop: Vol. 1 — The tactile advantages of embossing.

There’s nothing like a nice piece of print. For a designer, a trip to the printer can be a magical journey, where weeks, months or even years of work finally make the transition from screen to hand. Often, these “press checks” are for quality control purposes – one last chance to make sure the colors on your design look correct, layouts are still in order and the paper is just what you had in mind. For us, these trips are mandatory, as there’s nothing worse than having 10,000 business cards with the wrong shade of blue show up on your doorstep (and your books.)

Tactic designs ExactTarget IPO materials — A look at our graphic design on Wall Street.

As an Indianapolis branding firm, it was a pleasure to help our client (and neighbor) promote their public stock offering. To support ExactTarget’s important day, our design team created the signage, animated video, and podium graphics for the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) event.

From the Wall Street subway sign, to the 60′ external NYSE building facade, the design was rooted in simplicity. Our goal was to execute a clean and precise message, all while staying within the ExactTarget brand guidelines.

Please join us in congratulating ExactTarget on this important milestone!

Boxcar Press — An interesting video from a day in their shop!

Letterpress printing, dating back to the 15th century, is a technique that locks a movable part into a press and then impresses the image onto paper. We used this technique as part of our design process for our business cards – winner of a 2011 For Print Only Award.

Boxcar Press, a letterpress shop based in upstate New York, is one of the largest letterpress shops in the nation. With 50 tons of equipment, they are dedicated to providing the finest in handcrafted letterpress printing.

Here’s an interesting video on fresh ink blooming on the rollers:

Super Bowl 2012 — Unveiling the new 2012 Super Bowl Host Committee Poster.

If you know me well, when I catch wind of something disturbing or what would seem counter to reason, I’ll tell you what I think about it. Today, I saw a tweet about the new Super Bowl 2012 Host Committee poster and, being a designer and contributing member to the Indianapolis visual arts community, I had to take a peek.

UnderConsideration is a popular network of blogs and design-centric web sites meant to “question, push, analyze and agitate graphic design and those involved in the profession.” Within that network lives FPO, a blog focused exclusively on showcasing “printed matter that is either wildly innovative or prudently robust.”
