Designing Solutions — Using the practice of design to solve problems in everyday things around us.

There is a misconception that design exists only for the purpose of making things “look good”. While design should provide visual appeal, it is also a method of problem-solving, and should solve (not create) problems.

One example of a design problem is the dish soap dispenser. What could be more mundane than the chore of washing dishes? And the products we use come in the same, boring packaging that is often difficult to handle with wet hands. The designers of Method products recognized this so they decided to tackle and re-create the dish soap dispenser. They saw the need for a more visually appealing and better functioning product. However, they made three problems of their own before they rested on a solution.
